The first teaser for american horror story Season 11 is here, and it looks like it will be the gayest season yet.
Released on Thursday, October 6, the AHS: New York The teaser is full of references to the LGBTQ+ club scene in 1970s or 80s New York. The nightclub featured in the clips appears to be Brooklyn’s House of Yes, a famous queer club and performance venue that hosts theme parties, drag and burlesque shows, aerial acrobats, and more. Imagine a sparkling underground circus – a fitting location for Ryan Murphy’s spooky series.
The teaser opens with the club’s dance floor, the DJ looking like Freddie Mercury with his leather jacket, biker mustache, aviators and slicked back hair. Partygoers dance under the disco ball and cage dancers (another House of Yes feature), then the clips jump between fast, shaky shots of people in studded leather, cuffs and carrying chains. NYC’s A-Train then passes through the plane before a blood-dripping needle appears with the message ‘the deadliest year’.
The following images include a drop of blood falling into a cocktail, a reference to the Hanky Code (in the 70s and 80s, when it wasn’t safe to go out, gay people put bandanas in their back pockets to sneakily signal their homosexuality), and of course, no more bloody and naughty masks. “A season like no other” appears on the screen at another time.
The official AHS: New York logline teases that “mysterious deaths and disappearances are on the rise in the city” in Season 11. “Meanwhile, a doctor makes a chilling discovery, and a local reporter becomes tomorrow’s headline.”
Considering the potential setting and needle reference, it seems like the AIDS epidemic is part of the plot this season. The LGBTQ+ community is rumored to be targeted by a serial killer this season, and the teaser certainly implies that’s a possibility with POV shots of a masked stranger prompting worried stares around the club. The season could also spotlight New York’s most notorious serial killers, aside from the one who seems to be haunting the dance floor.
AHS: New YorkThe 10-episode season stars Joe Mantello, Billie Lourd, Zachary Quinto, Russell Tovey, Leslie Grossman, Charlie Carver, Sandra Bernhard, Isaac Powell, Denis O’Hare and Patti LuPone. It airs Wednesday, October 19 at 10/9c on FX with each episode airing the following day on Hulu. The show will release two episodes per week.
