Bradford, UK City of Culture 2025, is entering rapid flux, says Bishop

Bradford’s trajectory has “changed” after it was named the UK’s City of Culture for 2025 last week, the Bishop of Bradford, Dr Toby Howarth, has said.

Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries announced on Tuesday last week that Bradford’s bid to be the City of Culture had won, beating other shortlisted cities of Durham, Southampton and Wrexham. The is currently owned by Coventry.

In an article on the Church hours website this week, Dr Howarth writes: ‘I don’t remember being hugged by so many people, because together I realized our trajectory as a city and district had just changed. It was as if we had paddled our canoe down a river and were now caught in a new fast current.

Dr Howarth writes that one of the reasons Bradford has been named a City of Culture is its young population. “The city is full of young people without power or voice, whose stories are rarely told. City of Culture is less about getting them to visit an art gallery and more about bringing accessible circuses of music and food to the middle of the neighborhoods they live in, celebrating and reflecting the stories they want to tell.

He notes that the Church of England has “invested millions of pounds in the city”, referring to the planting of a resource church, Fountains Church Bradford, in a former nightclub (News, July 19, 2019 , April 29). “Like much-needed dental care contributing to a smile, Fountains Church Bradford shines in the city center alongside the National Media Museum, the Alhambra Theater and the ancient Odeon soon to be resurrected as ‘Bradford Live’.”

Dr Howarth writes that the bid would not have been won without the Bradford Literature Festival, chaired until recently by the Bishop of Leeds, the Rt Revd Nick Baines.

Bishop Baines said after the announcement last week, “Bradford is a young town in our young diocese and its energy and cultural richness deserves this recognition.”
