Chapel Allerton pub The Mustard Pot and town center nightclub The Key Club initially announced punters could watch England in the competition on their sites. However, the two have since released statements via social media letting people know that the screenings will not go as originally planned.

The 2022 edition of the global tournament has been the subject of intense controversy due to the human rights record of host country Qatar. Various political and sporting figures have spoken out against the decision to host the competition in Qatar and there have been instances of fans announcing their intention to boycott it.

The Mustard Pot initially announced that it would accept reservations for games and offer private room rentals for large group viewings. However, a statement shared on the pub’s Facebook page read: “I made the wrong decision to show the World Cup and I’m sorry. I hadn’t thought about it enough like I should have and on closer inspection, it’s clear we shouldn’t show it. All tickets have been refunded and sorry to anyone we offended by announcing we would be showing it.

In addition to canceling screenings, Key Club announced that it will be collecting donations for LGBTQ+ charities at upcoming events. Key Club’s statement on their official Facebook page reads: “We have decided to cancel the upcoming England matches which we had planned to show at Key Club.

“We wanted to create a safe space where people would feel comfortable watching football, however, after careful consideration and further research, we now understand that it is best to cancel upcoming events in response. ongoing LGBTQ+ issues surrounding the host country.

“The Key Club is committed to creating a safe, welcoming and inclusive space and we hope that you will all respect our decision. As a further mark of our support, we will be collecting donations for LGBTQ+ charities at upcoming events at Key Club. .”
