A popular American-inspired bar and restaurant in Southend is closing after 16 years.

Mangetout is a popular American-inspired family restaurant and bar in Southend town centre.

Bosses made the shocking announcement today that the restaurant is retiring after 16 years.

A spokesperson for the restaurant revealed the news on Facebook: “After 16 incredible years, our family has decided that the time has come for Mangetout to turn off their grills, put down their shakers and retire.

“It has been an absolute pleasure serving you over the years and sharing the best times with all of you.”

Mangetout served customers in different locations throughout its stay in the city.

It moved to Tylers Avenue – the former home of Churchill’s nightclub – from their former Chichester Road home in 2015 to keep up with growing demand.

In recent years it has moved to its current home in the Southend – London Road ‘restaurant strip’ near the top of the high street.

The spokesperson continued: “We want to say the biggest thank you to every customer who has walked through our doors from the days of ‘Little Mangetout’ to where we are now.

“Without you, our company would not have achieved what it has, and we are eternally grateful.”

Despite the sad news, the bosses promise that an “exciting new concept” will be launched on its site after they leave, details of which will be shared soon.

The doors of the restaurant will remain open until Sunday, July 16.
