Tucked away on a bustling West Yorkshire street, some confused passers-by assume they are experiencing a blast from the past as they head for a taste of nostalgia browsing what appears to be a VHS rental store. Some oblivious punters ask about renting a video, others even try to sell their own videotapes, until they find out that all is not as it seems.
Once you know the title of the “movie of the week” to request at the arrival counter, you will be led through the secret door and into the world’s first VHS (Very Hidden Speakeasy).
Welcome to RBT Video, an 80s speakeasy style cocktail bar on Northgate in Wakefield.
“It’s a time tunnel between the front and the bar at the back. A modern take on an 80s bar – steam punk style,” said Noel Roberts who came up with the concept during Lockdown.
Along with best friend Nathan, the couple set out to research and create this magical offering which opened two years ago.
The bar has proven popular with locals but also people from afar who spotted RBT Video on tiktok.
Backing onto the bar is a “parking lot” which has been transformed into a bar and open-air cinema, cleverly called “Lot”.
Noel runs Host and Home which owns RBT Video and Lot as well as a range of bars in Wakefield such as a tiki bar and nightclub inside a Grade 11 listed building.
