Liberian Athletics Federation Election Commission issues guidelines

Monrovia – The Liberian Athletics Federation (LAF) Election Commission has released guidelines for the federation’s elections, which are scheduled to take place on Saturday, November 20, 2021.

The elections are part of the 63rd LAF General Assembly, which will bring together members of the Executive Committee, registered clubs and individual members to be held at the offices of the Liberia National Olympic Committee (LNOC) on Randall Street, Monrovia.

The LAF leadership elections are scheduled for the next four years, which begin from 2022 to 2026, and in accordance with the LAF statutes and constitution, and that of World Athletics (WA) which calls for the holding of elections after every four years.

The last LAF elections took place on Saturday, November 25, 2017.

Cllr. Sylvester Dorbor Rennie is the chairman of the three-member electoral commission. Cllr. Rennie is the Vice President for Administration of the Liberia National Olympic Committee (LNOC).

According to the electoral directives, the positions to be filled are those of president, vice-president for administration, vice-president for technical affairs, financial secretary and treasurer.

The LAF Directive states that each candidate wishing to challenge any of the above positions, as mentioned, must write a letter to the Secretary of the Commission, indicating their interest in using one of the media and must also pay a non-refundable fee to the Secretary. of the Commission as follows:? ? ? ??? “Registration starts from Wednesday November 3, 2021 and ends on Monday November 15, 2021 at 6 p.m. for candidates wishing to contest one of the positions at the LAF General Assembly scheduled for Saturday November 20, 2021” , indicates the directive.

“Only the club chief and executive committee at the time who qualified on the Liberia Athletics Federation (LAF) list will be eligible to compete. In the case of the individual, he / she can compete for any of the positions; and in the case of institutions, each club is also allowed to present a single candidate for one of the posts.

Before a member can run for an election in the LAF leadership election or have the right to vote, that member must have attended three of the four general assemblies / congresses, ”he said. -he declares.

The LAF guideline states: “Individual and affiliate clubs / members who are not involved in the activities of the LAF, are not eligible to contest, participate or propose a candidate to participate in the election until that said clubs / individual members assume their active role. The list of qualified (eligible) candidates will be published by the LAF Election Commission on Tuesday, November 16, 2021 at the LAF offices at the Samuel K. Doe Sports Complex in Paynesville and in select local newspapers. “

According to the LAF directive, each qualified candidate will be required to submit a passport-sized photo for the same photo to be placed on the ballot and the campaign for the LAF election begins on Tuesday, November 16, 2021 and ends on Friday, 19 November 2021, by midnight.

He also indicated that the LAF Election Commission will also publish the list of qualified voters on Wednesday, November 16, 2021 at the LAF offices at the Samuel K. Doe Sports Complex in Paynesville and in some local newspapers.

“On Saturday, November 20, 2021, elections will begin as stipulated in General Assembly / Congress documents to the Liberia National Olympic Committee on Randall Street, Monrovia (LNOC) and will last for three hours. The counting of the ballots begins immediately after the close of polling stations, and each candidate is requested to send the name of a representative when voting, counting the ballots and announcing the results.The results of the elections will be announced immediately after the counting ballots, ”says the directive.

Meanwhile, the directive states that any candidate who has a complaint to file after the election results are announced must do so within five (5) minutes of the results announced, with a non-refundable fee of 200.00 US $. And upon receipt of the complaint, the LAF Election Commission will immediately investigate the complaint and make a decision on it. If a candidate has a complaint before the voting process, said candidate is also authorized to file such a complaint with the LAF Election Commission. And upon receipt of said complaint and costs, the LAF Election Commission will immediately investigate the same and issue its findings, before proceeding with the voting process.

“All eligible voters, whether individual or club, are entitled to one vote each during the voting process,” the directive intoned.
