Mother searches for answers after son dies at Schenectady bar

A mother mourns the loss of her son and seeks justice after learning that her friend may be responsible.

Police arrested 24-year-old Markeith Buchanan on Tuesday in connection with the fatal shooting that occurred outside a popular nightclub in Schenectady over the summer.

John Bass, the shooting victim, was the father of a three-year-old daughter. He was active in the community and worked with anti-bullying programs.

His mother says he was a well-rounded person who was on the high school swim team, wrestled, and made music that often reflected his life experience.

On the night of Friday July 1 at around 1am, John was shot dead outside the Vibez Bar and Lounge. Nearly three months later, police arrested Markeith Buchanan, a person Bass’s mother says knows very well.

“He and John were best friends, so for him to take your best friend’s life and run without remorse is really weird and says a lot about your character. It’s really disgusting and I just don’t understand it.

Buchanan was charged with murder and criminal possession of a firearm.
