Newcastle’s ‘best hidden gem’ bar celebrates anniversary with weekend DJs, rave and cocktail deals

One of Newcastle city center’s most popular bars is celebrating its birthday with a three-day series of events and special additions to its menu.

No. 28 opened on Nelson Street in 2010, promising to bring “something a little different” to the Newcastle bar scene. Tucked away down a hidden staircase at the entrance to Grainger Market, the award-winning bar claims to be the city’s ‘best hidden gem’.

April marks 12 years in Newcastle for No 28, and the bar invites patrons to join them for a long weekend of anniversary celebrations. The staff promise “lots of secret surprises” throughout the weekend, but have announced few details about what revelers can expect.

To start, the bar will host live DJs, hosting ‘local legend’ Mick Henderson on Friday the 22nd and Jon DaSilva of Manchester’s The Hacienda fame on Saturday the 23rd. The weekend will then end with a ‘birthday rave’ ” on Sunday. night.

No 28 is also marking the occasion by making some festive changes to its menu, with ‘birthday cocktails’ on offer all weekend for just £5. Anyone ordering the bar’s famous Bottomless Prosecco Brunch, widely regarded as one of the best bottomless brunches in Newcastle, will also receive a free mini birthday cake with their order.

#28 recently launched a brand new menu offering a selection of Spanish-inspired tapas dishes including albondigas, patatas bravas and calamari, served with the chef’s recipe tomato and aioli sauces. The menu also features mouth-watering creations such as crispy Jack Daniels-glazed chicken wings and black pudding tempura fritters.

Cocktails at No. 28 also saw a revamp this year, with more than a dozen new additions to the drinks menu. New creations available at the bar include sweet options such as the Garden Martini No. 28 flavored with Turkish delight, or fruity concoctions like the Bonita Applegum flavored with apple and chewing gum.

Open until 3 a.m. every night, n°28 turns into a nightclub from 10 p.m. on weekends with live DJ sets. Earlier in the evening, visitors can take advantage of the bar’s food specials, such as the Couples Feast which offers three tapas courses with patatas bravas, artisan bread, salad and a drink for £30.
