New York City Police, Fire and Paramedics responded just before 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, January 9, 2022 to a high-rise fire at a 19-story building at Twin Parks North West, 333 East East 181st Street near Tiebout Avenue in the Bronx in New York. The first report was from a neighbor who heard a smoke alarm and saw smoke.

Firefighters arrived to find smoke coming from behind the building. Flames were also visible coming out of a third window when firefighters arrived at the rear of the building. Firefighters immediately got to work rescuing people with ladders, and other firefighters came out with hoses to work to put out the blaze. The fire was contained in the original fire unit, which was a two-story apartment on the second and third floors of the high-rise building. There were flames spreading out in the hallway. FDNY Fire Marshal Daniel A. Nigro said residents who escaped from the original fire unit left the door open, allowing smoke to spread throughout the building. About 200 firefighters responded to the Twin Parks North West fire. Firefighters rescued victims suffering from severe smoke inhalations on every floor of the building. Some victims were in cardiac or respiratory arrest.

At least nineteen people were killed, including 9 children. Sixty people were injured, 32 of them with serious life-threatening injuries. The January 9, 2022 apartment fire was the third deadliest residential fire in the United States since 1978, following a 1979 New Jersey fire that killed 21 people and a 1982 California fire that killed 24 people.

There have also been fires in theaters or nightclubs where deaths have overtaken the worst residential fires. The most recent mass nightclub fire was The Station nightclub on February 20, 2003 in West Warwick, Rhode Island. The Great White group were performing when pyrotechnics on the stage ignited acoustic foam and caused a fire in less than a minute. Around 100 people died in the blaze and around 230 were injured.

The deadliest single building fire in U.S. history was the Chicago Iroquois Theater fire, which killed at least 602 people on December 30, 1903.

The building is a federal affordable housing building located in the Fordham neighborhood of the Bronx, New York. The building, which is a federally funded building constructed in 1972, had different construction standards from New York City standards, according to FDNY Fire Marshal Daniel Nigro.
