Restaurant and pub plans for Elements and Venue Bar in Southend

A FORMER nightclub is set to be transformed into a pub, restaurant and homes as part of ambitious new plans to reinvent a once iconic landmark.

London firm City Center Management has submitted grand plans to transform what used to be the Venue Bar in Alexandra Street, Southend.

The site has a long history, operating as Elements nightclub from 2009 to 2015 and Baker’s Bar before that.

At its peak, Elements could pack 1,500 clubbers over three floors, as well as a smoking area in Market Place.

Town Center management is seeking approval from Southend Council to build a ‘mixed-use’ pub on part of the ground floor, a restaurant in the remainder of the ground floor and basement and several apartments on the upper floors.

Ian Gilbert, councilor responsible for economic recovery and regeneration, said: ‘I think it’s really good to see plans coming forward to get this building back in working order and in use again.

‘This is a key site in Southend, which has a long history of providing entertainment for residents and has been closed for far too long now.

“Alexandra Street has long been a big part of Southend nightlife, and it would be great to see a reimagining of this building.”

The property has been vacant since 2020 when it ceased to operate as The Venue Bar.

Mr Gilbert added: ‘It’s a shame we’ve lost so many nightclubs over the years, but I can’t wait to see plans for a restaurant and bar develop.’

The planning documents submitted to the council do not specify whether the “habitable dwellings” will be houses for sale.

Plans will have to be submitted to council, with previous proposals for the site being rejected over the years.

A first offer to transform the property into apartments was refused in 2015.

Another application for the property was submitted in March 2016 to change the use of the ground floor to commercial space with the upper floors to become apartments.

Permission was again refused due to concerns that noise from the commercial space would disturb the occupants of the apartment.
