Nanaimo RCMP are reminding nightclub patrons to keep an eye on their drinks as they investigate several fortified drink incidents in Nanaimo over the weekend.
The incidents occurred on the evenings of Friday May 6 and Saturday May 7 at two different nightclubs in downtown Nanaimo.
On May 6, BC paramedics responded to a call about two people outside a nightclub who appeared extremely intoxicated.
The incident required both people to be hospitalized and a subsequent investigation determined that the victims may have ingested an intoxicant without their knowledge or consent.
Officers later learned that up to six people had ingested fortified drinks, but believe there may be more victims who have yet to come forward.
“These situations can happen anytime and anywhere,” said Nanaimo RCMP Constable Gary O’Brien.
“As a result, it is extremely important for clubgoers to be extremely mindful of their drinks.”
In order to ensure public safety, the RCMP has provided the following advice:
- Always keep your drink in sight
- Never accept a drink from someone you don’t know. Remember that fortified drinks can happen in any social setting and don’t just happen in nightclubs;
- When you’re on the dance floor or in the restroom, have a designated person responsible for your drink; and
- If you suddenly become dizzy, nauseous and have difficulty breathing, don’t allow yourself to be isolated. Immediately notify your friends of the situation and, if necessary, consult a doctor
Anyone with information regarding these incidents is asked to contact the Nanaimo RCMP at (250) 754-2345.
