A Norton bar throws its first Pride party on a Monday – complete with Happy Hour prizes, retro music and special guests.
Mon-Gay will take over Hydes Bar in the village every week, starting soon. It draws inspiration from the successful Mon-Gay events already taking place in Darlington venues.
Rowan Yard bar co-owner James Nielson said: “After the last lockdown we held a staff meeting to try and come up with ideas for how to reopen the pub on Monday and Thursday nights as we closed at 7pm. Hydes has karaoke nights every Tuesday, AJ’s open mic every Wednesday, Jo plays your cards right and “get the deal”, which is the same as Deal or No Deal, and live music every Sundays at 7 p.m.

“We recently installed beebox, allowing customers to select their own music for free,” he continued. “We just started a quiz on Thursday night and the key to the box.
“That just left us with Monday nights to fill. Hydes prides itself on providing something for every night of the week.
“Darren Hope, a member of our team, asked if we could host a gay party as there was nothing in the Billingham, Norton, Stockton area. Darlington already has an established ‘Mon-gay’.
“Since there is a large catchment area, we decided to give it a try, every Monday. We are also considering bringing in special guests to liven up the evening.”
The venue began promoting the evening on its social media and internal screens and through word of mouth. “It’s already generated quite a bit of interest,” added James.
* Hydes Bar’s first Mon-Gay event will take place on April 25 from 7pm.
