Once upon a time in Portland, Maine, the Top of the East cocktail bar was considered the fanciest bar in town. Located on the roof of the Westin Harborview Hotel, the Top of the East retains the name given to it when the hotel was called the Eastland. In 2020, the Westin promised a major renovation of the long-running lounge, complete with two outdoor rooftop terraces. Those ambitious plans seem to have been shelved, but the Top of the East was closed for a while to undergo another type of refurbishment and now they have plans for a grand reopening.
Shared on Facebook by Top of the East, the cocktail bar will reopen to the public on Friday, September 2 at 5 p.m. The Top of the East has been heavy on the grand reopening, but lacks details. They only revealed a handful of photos of the new space and were very tight-lipped about what guests can expect in terms of cocktails and menus.
Based solely on the photos they’ve revealed, it looks like the Top of the East is about to step back in time and recreate itself as a bar the Mad Men actors would have frequented. The decor is reminiscent of the days when large groups were common and martinis were the drink of choice. Top of the East remains one of Portland’s oldest bars, having opened in 1963.
