Ybor City bar and nightclub workers arrested for selling drugs

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — Several workers at the Ybor City bar and nightclub have been arrested after a two-month undercover drug-buying operation, according to the Tampa Police Department (TPD).

During “Operation Last Call”, which took place between July and September, undercover detectives made several drug purchases after being informed that they were being sold in bars and nightclubs in Ybor City.

“Some people may think that because these are nightspots, bars and clubs that there is nothing wrong with drugs flowing, but we want to make it very clear that’s not right,” TPD spokesperson Crystal Clark said. is not the place or town you are going to get away with selling drugs in the open, and here is a clear example of that.

TPD said during Operation Last Call, “drugs ranging from cocaine to Adderall” were purchased from Southern Nights club, White Lie bar, Coyote Ugly Saloon and Tangra nightclub.

“Each time it was basically employees who seemed to do this over and over again,” Clark said. “Detectives would ask them for the drugs, they would go get their own things and collect them, and from there they would find secret ways to get it to them, whether it was through shot glasses or in the receipt holders. .”

After issuing six warrants, the following four suspects were arrested:

  • Brandon Brinson, 33, bartender at Southern Nights
    • Arrested September 13
    • Two charges of delivering a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a church due to the nightclub’s proximity to a church
  • Carlos Diaz, 33, who worked as a bartender at Tangra
    • Arrested September 14
    • One count of delivering a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a church
  • Promise Toby, 30, who worked as a bartender at the White Lie bar
    • Arrested September 18
    • Three counts of delivering a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a church and arrested for failure to appear (driving an unregistered vehicle and driving with a suspended license)
  • Ashley Poole, 32, waitress at Coyote Ugly
    • Arrested September 20
    • Two counts of delivering a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a church

“We will not tolerate individuals using businesses in our city as a playground for illegal activity,” Chief Mary O’Connor said. “Ybor City is one of Tampa’s most popular attractions both for our residents and for the tens of thousands of visitors to our city each month. We will continue to work to ensure this area is a safe fun place to visit. .”

TPD said officers expected to make at least two more arrests.
